Niles West Symphonic Orchestra created, composed, and performed their 2026 Collective Composition at the 2026 Illinois Music Education Conference.

A Peace of Unity | Collective Composition 2024
At the National Summit for Courageous Conversations About Race, students from the Niles West Symphonic Orchestra had the honor to perform an original and collectively-conceived composition, "A Peace of Unity". It is fully owned and representative of the students. Student voice and leadership were central to this composition and the themes of "freedom" and "learning to be free" were explored and processed through the music. Their sense of community and individual voice have been strengthened through the collective composition and process.
Collective Compositions 2023
This year in September we performed a Collective Composition with special guest educators and musicians from The Collective Conservatory and the Peabody Institute. Big thanks to the facilitators, faculty and guest musicians, and students for partaking in this project!
